A panel discussion in Yangon Univeristy entitled: ‘Student and the Political’ was supposed to be held yesterday, 25 June 2018. However, the Student Union decided to postpone it due to the non-issuance of the event’s permit by the university dean.
The ‘Student and the Political’ panel discussion was organised by the Student Union. One of the board members of National Network for Education Reform (NNER), Dr. Thein Lwin and Dr. Arkarmoethu from Taungkoke University (East-Yangon) were invited to facilitate the panel.
According to Dr. Arkarmoethu, the university dean expressed that the terms of the panel discussion was unrelevant. Dr. Arkarmoethu also remarked how ‘unusual the process’ was because the Yangon University even asked for the panel discussion’s speaker biography, list of attendees, and details of the sub-topics.
In the Student Union’s statement, they said that “The school authority banned the students from exercising their basic rights, their freedom of speech and freedom of discussion.” For this reason, the Student Union decided to hold another event in Yangon University in July without taking any permission.
In the meantime, ‘Student and the Political’ panel discussion will held today in the ‘Dagon University.
